Teresa Fanego works as a Full Professor of English Language and Linguistics at the University of Santiago de Compostela. She studied Germanic Philology in Santiago de Compostela and specialized (1975/1976) in English Linguistics at University College London, on a British Council scholarship. After completing her doctorate (Extraordinary PhD Award, Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, 1980), she was appointed (1984) Associate Professor of English at Santiago de Compostela and since May 1990 she holds the chair in English Language and Linguistics.

Since 1991 she has been the director of the research unit for Variation, Linguistic Change and Grammaticalization (VLCG). The unit carries out internationally recognised corpus-based research on grammatical change in the history of English and on changes going on in Present-day English; on a broader level, its members are also interested in typological issues, with a focus on cognitive-functional linguistics, grammaticalization and Construction Grammar. To date, the unit has received  competitive funding through eight research projects of the National Research Plan and a number of additional grants from other institutions and organizations. Since 2009 it has been a partner in the international consortium of universities carrying out the expansion and tagging of ARCHER, the diachronic corpus of British and American English registers originally compiled by Douglas Biber (Northern Arizona) and Edward Finegan (Southern California) in the early 1990s.

Teresa Fanego is also the coordinator of the English Linguistics Circle (ELC), a research network comprising five research teams based at the Universities of Santiago de Compostela and Vigo. The network was established in 2006 and is generously supported by the Regional Government of Galicia and the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, under the research grants 2006/14-0, 2008/047, CN2011/011, R2014/016 and FFI2014-51873-REDT. In October 2014, the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness appointed ELC as  a Thematic Network of Excellence for a two-year term (2015-2016).
