Dr Francisco J. Álvarez Gil is a senior lecturer (PhD) in the Department of Modern Philology, Translation and Interpreting at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and member of the research group Discourse, Communication & Society (DiCoS). His research interests revolve around the analysis of specialised English from a synchronic and diachronic perspective, corpus linguistics, and language pedagogy at tertiary level, and he has published in this respect in national and international peer-reviewed journals.
He has delivered numerous talks on linguistic aspects of, say, Modern English scientific writing in international conferences, e.g. XVIII Congresso Internazionale dell’Associazione Italiana de Linguistica Applicata, 20th International Conference on English Historical linguistics, and Colloque International de Linguistique de Corpus. Additionally, he has been a visiting scholar in some reputed Universities with leading departments in English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Some of these are the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain), the University of Lisbon (Portugal), the Jean Moulin University Lyon 3 (France), the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Italy), among others.
Currently, he is the chief editor of the indexed Journal Revista de Lenguas para Fines Específicos, and he is a member of the editorial board of other 3 journals in the field of linguistics and language pedagogy. He collaborates as well as an external evaluator for indexed scientific journals, such as the Journal of English for Academic Purposes, Signos. Estudios de Lingüística, Porta Linguarum, among others.
